‘Rat Park’ -Stuart McMillen

You’ll never think about drug addiction the same way again after reading this comic.

What I found absolutely impressive and stunning about this comic is the way the artist explained the identification and elimination of the confounding factors in the Rat Park study. This is one of the hardest parts of experiments to explain to the public, and I think it was just brilliantly done.

ultrafacts:

For 37 years it’s been up there on the flat roof of Mark Gubin’s building in the flight path of Mitchell International Airport. A sign painted in letters 6 feet tall tells people arriving here by air: “WELCOME TO CLEVELAND.”

“There’s not a real purpose for having this here except madness, which I tend to be pretty good at,” Gubin said

Above that the roof, he was having lunch one day in 1978 with a woman who worked as his assistant. Taking note of all the low-flying planes, she said it would be nice to make a sign welcoming everyone to Milwaukee. “You know what would even be better?” Gubin said.

The next thing you know, he’s out there on the black roof with a roller and white paint creating the sign that would bring more notoriety than anything else in his long career. A story about his confusing message ran in thousands of newspapers and magazines, on national TV news, “The Tonight Show,” Paul Harvey, all over.

… I hope they found a less time-intensive method of reproducing things than transcribing them into Minecraft books like medieval monks in scriptoria …

Have you ever met Minecrafters? They will spend hours upon hours doing anything, even the most mind-numbing tasks imaginable. And the ones who don’t will hack the shit out of the game to get anything done.

Here’s a link:

The Uncensored Library — blockworks

The Uncensored Library is a massive international collaboration between Blockworks, Reporters Without Borders, MediaMonks, and the German marketing company DDB.

24 builders from 16 countries used 12.5 million blocks to build a neoclassical building with several gardens and decorative features like a rotunda featuring flags of the world, or a massive statue of a clenched fist holding an ink pen.

It houses information from all 180 countries in the press freedom index, with special halls dedicated to information from countries where reporters are persecuted. They include Russia, Mexico, Egypt, Vietnam, and Saudi Arabia.

The Library server itself is under 24/7 guard against unauthorized modification. It’s also free to download in single-player mode.

Please visit their site for more information, including free downloads, a video tour, and a shop.

As a librarian I’d just like to say this is fucKING AWESOME!
